Boris Bonev, Chair of Spasi Sofia, addressed journalists regarding a report pertaining to properties in the Mladost district of Sofia. Bonev characterized the proposal—which envisions a 22-storey building encompassing nearly 60,000 square meters of gross floor area—as what he termed one of the most “scandalous and corrupt decisions.” He asserted that the development represents a major corruption deal being advanced quietly, contrary to the public interest. Bonev expressed concern that the scale of the proposed construction would be highly visible across Sofia, potentially creating issues for Mladost residents.
He stated that local voters have historically supported politicians who advocate for curbing overdevelopment. Meanwhile, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova emphasized procedural concerns, noting that the Sofia Municipality reportedly owns 92% of the property, while private ownership accounts for only 8%. She argued that this ownership ratio suggests the municipality should govern the development guidelines.
Bonev further criticized political bodies expected to support the measure, including Mayor Vassil Terziev, for not issuing a public statement. He added that the submitted report closely mirrors a proposal from a previous term, which, he noted, had been withdrawn following public outcry and opposition. The discussion highlights ongoing tensions regarding urban planning and governance within Sofia’s Mladost area, with accusations centering on potential conflicts of interest and corrupt dealings.
