Sofia Leader Slams Mladost Property Deal as Corrupt

Boris Bonev, Chair of Spasi Sofia, stated to journalists that a report concerning properties in Sofia’s Mladost district raises significant concerns regarding potential overdevelopment. The proposal involves constructing a 22-story building with an estimated gross floor area of nearly 60,000 sq m. Bonev characterized the initiative as what he termed a “scandalous and corrupt” decision, suggesting it represents a substantial corruption deal being advanced contrary to the public interest.

Bonev specifically highlighted that the plan would permit a large structure at a busy intersection within Mladost. He asserted that residents of the area have historically favored political figures who advocate for curbing overdevelopment. Adding to the critique, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova pointed out the ownership structure of the property, noting that the Sofia Municipality holds 92% ownership while the private owner holds only 8%.

Nikolova argued that this ratio logically implies the municipality should dictate the terms and conditions for future development in the area. Bonev also criticized certain political alignments expected to support the proposal, and Mayor Vassil Terziev for not issuing a public statement on the matter. He further alleged that the submitted report mirrors a proposal from a previous municipal term, which had been withdrawn following public opposition despite the majority support of a political party at the time.

Bonev concluded by expressing concern that current governance conditions allow for actions perceived as exploiting temporary opportunities.
