52nd National Assembly’s Inaugural Sitting: Parliament Chair Elected, Six Parliamentary Groups Formed

The 52nd National Assembly convened for its inaugural session in Bulgaria on Thursday. Following a split within the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition, six distinct parliamentary groups were established. Mihaela Dotsova of Progressive Bulgaria was elected as the National Assembly Chair, with support from her coalition, GERB-UDF, and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).

The session opened with the administration of the oath to the 240 lawmakers by Progressive Bulgaria MP Rumen Milanov. President Iliana Iotova addressed the body, emphasizing the legislature’s immediate responsibility to vote on the 2026 State budget. She urged Bulgaria to adopt a more assertive stance within the European Union.

During subsequent speeches, elected representatives outlined their party priorities. Dotsova called for the restoration of best practices in Bulgarian lawmaking, advocating for processes based on debate rather than mere procedural formalism. Various political forces issued declarations defining their opposition roles.

Progressive Bulgaria highlighted the passing of the State budget, treasury issues, and the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council as key objectives. GERB-UDF declared its readiness to act as a constructive opposition defending national interests. The MRF focused on promoting rights, economic stability, and Bulgaria’s European trajectory.

Meanwhile, Vazrazhdane positioned itself as the “nation’s conscience,” while the CC-DB coalition emphasized defending the rule of law and modernizing the state. These diverse declarations set the agenda for the newly formed national assembly as it navigates its mandate in Bulgaria.
