Director General: By Organizing Talks about April Uprising, BTA Took Step towards People

Speaking at a conference concerning the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, the Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), emphasized the crucial role of media engagement. Mitev stated that the efforts by BTA to organize discussions on the April Uprising were vital, noting that modern media outlets must proactively connect with their audiences to remain useful. The conference marked the conclusion of a series hosted by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the uprising.

Mitev advised that a comprehensive assessment of the current national standing requires understanding both international contexts and Bulgaria’s own history. He argued that placing the nation within a broader historical framework allows people to recognize the progress made. He highlighted the profound influence media has on shaping public opinion.

According to the Director General, the participants in the April Uprising demonstrated foundational elements necessary for any successful movement: unwavering hope and a readiness to make sacrifices. Mitev further framed the April Uprising as a pivotal moment in Bulgarian history, a key step toward establishing a free and independent state. However, he cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly.

He warned that, much like history itself, national pride is often subject to manipulation for various agendas. Therefore, Mitev stressed that the responsibility falls upon scholars and the media to foster national self-esteem—not in terms of superiority, but through genuine pride in the country’s history and achievements, while actively working toward future improvements.
