Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At the national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees, urging Bulgarians to honor the memory of the ordinary citizens who became national heroes. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum, emphasized that the anniversary should serve as a moment for national reflection and unity. Gagov suggested that the commemoration should achieve two goals: first, to solidify the event as a purely national observance, mirroring the aspirations of the original uprising; and second, to reconnect the populace with history as a source of collective pride.

He noted that the anniversary provides an opportunity to recall the accomplishments of ancestors, asserting that current generations share the same foundational roots. The mayor drew a contrast between the revolutionary fervor of 1876 and the focus of modern youth, who, according to Gagov, are preoccupied with social media, unlike their predecessors who were preparing for sacrifice. While acknowledging that the commemorations coincided with an election campaign, Gagov highlighted the contrast between the political leadership of today and those of the past.

Ultimately, Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not legendary figures but tangible individuals. He called upon Bulgarians to understand their legacy on a human level, stating that the people of that era exemplified the potential inherent in everyday citizens. The conference is part of a broader initiative by BTA to mark the anniversary and is framed within the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” project.
