Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At a national conference held at the Panagyurishte History Museum, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. Gagov urged Bulgarians to recognize themselves as the inheritors of the ordinary citizens who became historical figures during the revolt. He stated that the anniversary should serve as a moment for national reflection on unity and national pride.

While acknowledging that the commemorations coincided with an ongoing election campaign, Gagov drew a distinction between the political leaders of the past and those currently in office, noting that his comparison was not favorable to the present day. According to the mayor, the anniversary should achieve two goals: establishing a truly national commemoration, mirroring the aspirations of the original uprising, and helping the public connect with history as a source of collective pride. Gagov suggested that the commemoration offers a chance to recall the accomplishments of past generations, emphasizing the shared roots between contemporary Bulgarians and their ancestors.

He contrasted the revolutionary spirit of the youth in 1876, who were reportedly preparing for sacrifice, with modern youth who, he observed, often focus on social media. The mayor stressed that the figures of the April Uprising were not mythical, but real individuals. He called for the legacy of these heroes to be understood in tangible human terms, stating, “They are us.” He concluded by urging Bulgarians to uphold the example set by those ordinary people who history elevated to greatness.

The event was part of a broader series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency to mark the significant anniversary.
