Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

During a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev emphasized that history should be viewed as a continuously unfolding narrative rather than solely through traditional commemorative rhetoric. Speaking at the BTA-hosted event in Panagyurishte, the prof noted that Bulgaria is navigating a period of significant complexity, drawing parallels to the challenges faced by the nation in 1876.

Valchev stated that the Uprising was the culmination of numerous Bulgarian efforts to secure political liberation throughout the nineteenth century. He argued that these persistent attempts eventually led to the realization that national dignity required self-reliance. He stressed that the year 1876 exemplifies the desire of the people to take control of their own destiny—a critical lesson for the present time.

The rector outlined three key lessons derived from the past. First, he noted that the uprising was fueled by a deep belief in the nation’s future. He urged that commemorations must initiate a sustained commitment to preserving memory by documenting events and reviving family histories.

Second, he highlighted the importance of fostering belief in the younger generation, who historically assumed the responsibility for the country’s development. Concluding his remarks, Prof. Valchev asserted that while accepting the necessity of self-sacrifice is one matter, taking responsibility for organizing the state is another.

He concluded that it is a societal duty to guide the nation forward.
