On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising serve to commemorate the martyrs who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom. He made these remarks at the opening conference held at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 revolt. This event concludes a series of discussions organized by BTA across multiple revolutionary districts, including Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Giurgiu.

During the conference, Valchev noted that the primary lessons derived from the April Uprising emphasize establishing overarching goals before tackling the necessary difficult steps. He highlighted that the narrative of failure within the revolt ultimately led to Bulgaria’s success in achieving freedom. He further drew a parallel between this historical outcome and the religious concept of salvation, emphasizing the profound impact media can have in shaping public opinion and supporting a nation’s cause.

Valchev also presented insights drawn from Zahari Stoyanov’s writings, advising that effective leadership requires activity, detachment from personal gain, the ability to prevent despair among followers, and deep knowledge. He recounted the extensive preparatory activities undertaken by BTA, which included commemorative ceremonies in Giurgiu and Ruse, and early discussions in Vratsa and Sliven, leading up to the major commemorations around the date of the uprising.
