On April Uprising Revive Memory of Freedom Martyrs, Says BTA Director General

Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that discussions surrounding the 1876 April Uprising serve to commemorate the sacrifices made for Bulgaria’s freedom. Speaking at the opening conference marking the 150th anniversary of the event at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, Valchev noted that this gathering concluded a series of discussions held across the four revolutionary districts, alongside events in Ruse and Giurgiu. During the talks, Valchev emphasized that a key takeaway from the April Uprising is the necessity of prioritizing overarching national objectives over immediate, difficult steps.

He highlighted the consensus that even periods perceived as setbacks ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s ultimate success: its freedom. Valchev also drew parallels between this concept and the power of media, noting its capacity to significantly shape public opinion and support national endurance, a dynamic observed during the uprising across Europe. The discussions also reviewed historical guidance, including excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings.

These writings offered leadership recommendations, stressing that leaders must be proactive, avoid personal gain, and shield their followers from despair. Valchev recalled the extensive preparatory efforts, which included memorial services and discussions in various locations, beginning as early as December. He confirmed that the BTA will continue these discussions internationally, in cities such as Bucharest, Belgrade, and Odesa.

Furthermore, Valchev announced that the BTA’s 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media will be dedicated to the theme, “Media and Leaders.”
