Museum Director: April Uprising Shows Bulgarians Succeed When They Act Independently

During a BTA-hosted conference on “150 Years since the April Uprising – 1876,” Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed the historical significance of Bulgarian national movements.

Shopov suggested that historical successes, such as the April Uprising and the subsequent Unification, demonstrate the importance of independent action and strategic surprise. He noted that history serves as both a record of the past and a guide for the future, emphasizing the need for collective progress while avoiding past errors. Recalling the events of April 30, he described it as a pivotal, albeit challenging, day for Panagyurishte 150 years prior.

According to Shopov, the local population mobilized despite the certainty of defeat, driven by the pursuit of future freedom. He highlighted that the mid-19th century saw the town boasting a robust civic society, supported by numerous guild associations and businesses dedicated to the common cause. While acknowledging the military limitations against the Ottoman Empire, the insurgents’ primary goal, Shopov stated, was to galvanize the people’s belief in their own collective strength.

He argued that the April Uprising provides numerous examples of patriotism worthy of study and transmission. Furthermore, he cited the assembly in Oborishte as an early example of statehood and tolerance—values relevant to modern European contexts. Shopov affirmed that Panagyurishte holds a significant role in the development of Bulgarian state traditions.

The forum, supported by the local municipality and the Historical Museum, is part of a larger BTA initiative commemorating Bulgarian history up to 2032.
