Museum Director: April Uprising Shows Bulgarians Succeed When They Act Independently

Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed a BTA-hosted conference on “150 Years since the April Uprising – 1876” on Thursday.

He stated that historical events, such as the April Uprising and the subsequent Unification, demonstrate that Bulgarian success often stems from independent action and the ability to surprise the international community. Shopov emphasized that history serves not only as a record of the past but also as a guide for future collective progress, cautioning against repeating past errors. He recalled that April 30 marked a profoundly significant day for Panagyurishte 150 years prior, when local residents mobilized for future freedom despite knowing the odds were against them.

Shopov noted that the town possessed a sophisticated civic structure even in the mid-19th century, featuring numerous guild associations and businesses that supported the common cause. While acknowledging the insurgents’ limited capacity to defeat the Ottoman Empire, he pointed out that their primary goal was to instill a belief in the people’s collective strength. For Shopov, the April Uprising offers numerous examples of patriotism that require careful interpretation and transmission.

He highlighted the assembly in Oborishte as an instance of early statehood and tolerance—values he believes are relevant to the contemporary European context. He asserted that Panagyurishte plays a pivotal role in the formation of Bulgarian state traditions. The forum, supported by the Panagyurishte Municipality and the local Historical Museum, is part of a series of BTA discussions marking the anniversary.

This event falls under BTA’s “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative, which commemorates major Bulgarian historical anniversaries up to 2032.
