A conference commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte on Thursday, concluding a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof. Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc.
Prof. Atanas Shopov. BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising help maintain the memory of those who fought for Bulgaria’s freedom.
These talks spanned the four revolutionary districts of the uprising—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that the key takeaway was the need to establish major goals before tackling difficult steps. He also announced that the 2026 BTA Meeting of Bulgarian Media will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary.
BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s vital role in connecting with the public, noting that the lessons from the April Uprising include the dedication to a cause and the willingness to make sacrifices. He cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, lest it be manipulated, asserting that media and scholars must help build national self-esteem based on achievements. Prof.
Valchev urged viewing history as a current subject, moving beyond mere slogans. He highlighted that the 1876 uprising demonstrated the Bulgarian desire to control its own destiny, and stressed the importance of believing in the younger generation. Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of the “ordinary people whom history made great.” Boyko Vassilev noted that the uprising raises enduring questions relevant to contemporary Bulgarian public life.
