2026 Motorcycle Season Opens in Sofia with Call to Follow Traffic Laws

The 2026 motorcycle season officially commenced in Sofia with a ceremony held in Alexander Nevsky Square on Saturday. The event included a water blessing ritual led by Father Kostadin, who emphasized the importance of tolerance among all road users. Following the ceremony, numerous motorcyclists rode through the central city boulevards toward the Boyana area.

Lyubomir Zhingov, a member of the Sofia Motorcyclists Association, addressed journalists at the opening. Zhingov stated, “Motorcyclists are back on the road—watch out for them and follow the rules.” He urged both riders and drivers to exercise caution, noting that the warming weather signals the return to riding. He stressed that adherence to the Road Traffic Act and maintaining appropriate speeds are paramount for the safety of everyone traveling.

Zhingov also pointed out that the current state of Bulgaria’s road infrastructure may contribute to traffic incidents. Furthermore, the Sofia Motorcyclists Association addressed the topic of third-party liability insurance, arguing that mandatory annual coverage is excessive when motorcycles are used only during warmer months. The association plans to meet next week with representatives from the Financial Supervision Commission, with the national ombudsman also expected to attend the discussions.
