Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration marking the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising was held in the historic area of Oborishte. The event commenced with the opening of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address before the monument, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

He stated that the desire for freedom among Bulgarians eventually culminates in the April rebellion, describing it as the “Bulgarian spring” following a long period. Lalov emphasized the role of Oborishte, noting that the gathering of delegates near and far on April 14, 1876, marked a shared belief in a free Bulgaria. He asserted that Oborishte signifies the beginning of the Bulgarian parliamentary tradition.

Lalov concluded by referencing Professor Marko Semov’s assertion that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte. He stated that these two locations remain central to understanding the nation’s destiny. The commemoration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, and several local and state authority representatives.

Wreaths and floral tributes were laid at the site during the ceremony.
