Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration was held in the historic area of Oborishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event commenced with the opening of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address at the monument, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

Lalov stated that the desire for freedom among Bulgarians eventually culminated in the April rebellion. He noted that the April Uprising represents the “Bulgarian spring” after a long period of difficulty. He emphasized the importance of Oborishte, stating that the gathering of delegates from various regions on April 14, 1876, marked a unified belief in a free Bulgaria.

Lalov further mentioned that Oborishte is significant as the beginning of the Bulgarian parliamentary tradition. He concluded by drawing a parallel to Prof. Marko Semov’s assertion that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte, suggesting these locations remain central to the nation’s identity.

The commemoration was attended by numerous officials, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, and various representatives from state and local authorities. Wreaths and floral tributes were laid at the site during the proceedings.
