A team comprising geologists and engineers inspected a section of the third-class road (III-8641) connecting Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been significantly impacted by a massive landslide. According to Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, the group assessed options for temporary stabilization and the construction of a bypass to restore traffic flow until a permanent solution can be designed. The working group, which included engineer Kalin Kalchev and representatives from the road maintenance company, conducted an on-site review of the affected area.
Kushev stated that the most feasible immediate option identified is utilizing an existing road that passes above the landslide zone. Officials plan to inspect properties along this route to analyze possibilities for widening and creating passing points to accommodate temporary traffic. A determination regarding the viability of this route as a temporary bypass is anticipated by early next week.
While an alternative route below the slide, following a forest road, was considered, it was also found to be obstructed by displaced earth masses. Experts noted that the landslide is extensive, which complicates the implementation of rapid recovery measures for the critical road link. Preliminary observations suggest the underlying terrain is in relatively good condition, showing no visible signs of active deformation, though a final assessment remains pending.
The estimated length for the potential temporary bypass is approximately one and a half kilometers. Work continues on analyzing all available options to restore passage on the road.
