Interior Minister Dechev, Interior Ministry Secretary General Kandev Visit US

A delegation from the Interior Ministry, led by caretaker minister Emil Dechev, conducted a working visit to the United States, according to the ministry’s official website. The group included the acting Secretary General Chief Commissioner Georgi Kandev, Deputy Minister Ivan Anchev, and chef de cabinet Ivelina Dundakova. During the visit, the delegation met with representatives from several key U.S.

agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, as well as the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI). Discussions emphasized the existing bilateral cooperation in security matters, with specific focus areas being counterterrorism, border security, and migration control. The Bulgarian delegation also noted the country’s advancements regarding the process of joining the U.S.

Visa Waiver Program. A central theme of the talks was strengthening the partnership and operational cooperation between the two nations’ institutions. This collaboration spans training, the exchange of expertise, professional development, and developing joint efforts in law enforcement and security.

Furthermore, the representatives discussed opportunities to expand practical and expert-level cooperation across partner institutions. The interior ministry delegation also engaged with local stakeholders, meeting with members of the Bulgarian community in Washington and the surrounding region, and with the Bulgarian-American Police Association. Future engagements are scheduled, including meetings at the U.S.

Department of State with various bureaus—such as International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and Counterterrorism—and a planned visit to the Department’s Diplomatic Security Service.
