Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev publicly addressed allegations concerning the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev. Dechev stated that “old cops” were employing familiar and persistent tactics to undermine and neutralize Kandev. Earlier in the day, Kandev had issued a video message alleging that he faced pressure to resign due to individuals submitting false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

Following this, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov also released a video message, characterizing the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that following efforts to curb attacks on democracy and secure millions of euros intended to undermine elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had allegedly been launched. Dechev added that his support for Kandev was absolute, expressing confidence in his integrity as the future interior minister. He emphasized the significant responsibility Kandev would hold in resolving what he termed a “fabricated scandal.”

The acting minister further detailed the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry over the past two months, claiming they had demonstrated a commitment to minimizing electoral crimes, which Dechev described as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.” He asserted that this was achieved through considerable effort and resolve, framing the struggle as a defense against forces seeking to subvert the will of the Bulgarian electorate during elections.

Dechev concluded by stating that their adversary had powerful allies within key judicial positions.
