Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused “old cops” of employing familiar tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, in a Facebook post on Friday. Earlier, Kandev stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being filed against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Adding to the tension, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov stated that following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and seize funds misused to undermine elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had begun.
Dechev expressed full support for Kandev, asserting his integrity and noting that the future interior minister would face significant responsibility in resolving what he termed a fabricated scandal. Dechev further highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry, claiming they had successfully limited electoral crimes—which he described as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy”—to minimal levels within two months. He attributed this success to significant effort and resolve, framing the situation as a struggle against forces attempting to subvert the will of the Bulgarian electorate.
Dechev also suggested that the adversaries in this conflict had powerful allies within the judiciary.
