Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. The purchased assets include five complete sets of advanced monitoring and life support systems, encompassing vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps. These systems are designed to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness levels during prolonged, long-distance patient transport.

This new inventory allows the MMA to conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients, each requiring continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment while airborne. The equipment is certified for immediate installation on onboard aircraft, ensuring a rapid response capacity during emergencies. As the sole institution in Bulgaria combining specialized resources and trained personnel for air medical evacuation, the MMA coordinates closely with the Bulgarian Air Force.

This partnership enables rapid deployment capabilities in response to mass disasters, accidents, or military conflicts requiring the stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. According to Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, the new technology substantially enhances the ability to provide care in extreme environments. He emphasized that successful air medical evacuation relies not only on advanced equipment but also on highly trained medical teams capable of operating effectively in dynamic, high-risk settings.

To maintain operational readiness, the MMA conducts regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios, thereby improving coordination between its medical staff and aviation structures.
