President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of consultations with the six parliamentary groups on May 5, according to the President’s press secretariat. This process is a constitutional requirement preceding the assignment of a Prime Minister-designate. Following these meetings, President Iotova will appoint the Prime Minister-designate put forward by the largest parliamentary group to form the next government.
The schedule for the consultations begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which holds the largest representation with 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, Iotova will meet with the leadership of the remaining groups: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. These discussions represent a critical step in the post-election political process.
After concluding her meetings with all factions, President Iotova is expected to address the media with a statement detailing the outcomes of the parliamentary consultations. The current legislative session began with the swearing-in of Members of Parliament on April 30, an event that saw Mihaela Dotsova of Progressive Bulgaria elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. The upcoming consultations aim to establish a clear path toward governmental formation by following established constitutional protocol, culminating in a formal announcement from the President.
