President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level consultations with the country’s six major parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a constitutionally mandated step preceding the formation of a new government. Following the conclusion of these discussions, President Iotova will be responsible for assigning the role of Prime Minister-designate, a position to be filled by the candidate nominated by the largest parliamentary bloc.
The sequence of the consultations is structured to begin with the dominant political force. Iotova will first meet with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, she will engage in separate meetings with the leaderships of GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane.
These consultations are a critical juncture in the nation’s political process, designed to gauge consensus and determine the path forward for executive governance. Upon concluding her discussions with all the parliamentary groups, President Iotova has indicated that she will address the media with a formal statement summarizing the outcomes. This political timeline follows the swearing-in ceremony for Members of Parliament on April 30, during which Mihaela Dotsova, representing Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly.
The upcoming consultations represent the next major procedural step in establishing the government structure, making the proceedings closely watched by political observers.
