Accident Numbers Down in First Months of 2026, Says Labour Inspectorate Executive Director

By mid-April 2026, the General Labour Inspectorate reported a decrease in the overall number of workplace accidents. According to Executive Director Ekaterina Asenova, 126 workplace accidents had been recorded through this period, compared to 157 during the same time in 2025. Fatal workplace accidents dropped to 26, down from 36 in the previous period, and non-traumatic fatal incidents also saw a reduction, totaling 14 against 19 in 2025.

Asenova noted that statistics indicate 90% of workplace accidents are preventable if occupational safety rules are followed. On the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, she highlighted common causes, such as crushing, falling, and being struck by objects. Labour Inspectorate data identifies construction, crop and livestock farming, metal product manufacturing, and trade as high-risk sectors as of mid-April 2026.

Increased inspection activity in construction has shown positive results, reducing reported accidents from 12 by mid-April 2025 to six in 2026. Land transport also showed marked improvement, reporting zero accidents in 2026 compared to four, including one fatality, in 2025. The Director stressed that employers hold full responsibility for maintaining safe working environments.

She emphasized that safety must be a daily mindset, not limited to specific observance days. Moving forward, inspections will continue to target high-risk sectors, alongside focusing on risks related to chemical agents. Furthermore, campaigns are planned to reinforce compliance with labor legislation and to educate the public on the lawful employment of minors.
