Accident Numbers Down in First Months of 2026, Says Labour Inspectorate Executive Director

As of mid-April 2026, General Labour Inspectorate Executive Director Ekaterina Asenova reported a decline in the overall number of workplace accidents. Data indicates that 126 total workplace accidents have been recorded through this date, a reduction compared to the 157 reported during the same period in 2025. Fatal workplace accidents stood at 26, down from 36 in the corresponding 2025 period.

Additionally, non-traumatic fatal incidents decreased to 14 cases, compared to 19 in the previous year. Asenova noted that statistics suggest 90% of workplace accidents are preventable if occupational safety regulations are followed. She cited common causes of injury, including crushing, entrapment, falls from height, and impacts from falling objects.

While high-risk sectors remain construction, crop and livestock farming, metal product manufacturing, and trade, inspections have shown varied results. Increased oversight in construction has positively impacted safety, lowering reported accidents from 12 by mid-April 2025 to six in April 2026. Land transport also saw a significant decrease, reporting zero accidents in 2026, compared to four, including one fatality, in 2025.
