The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria on Friday of being utilized to target officials involved in institutional reform. These statements followed claims by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he was subjected to pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was once again being used as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” naming GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.
Mirchev contended that this model continues to operate, suggesting the prosecution is being employed to undermine reformers. His comments followed Kandev’s earlier video statement detailing pressure and warning calls he received, alleging that false testimony was being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Mirchev and party co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov also announced filing alerts with the prosecution service concerning a journalistic investigation by BIRD.
This investigation allegedly documented recordings of conversations between former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary regarding bribes exchanged for court decisions. Furthermore, the party plans to push for parliamentary hearings regarding Delyan Peevski’s finances, citing private jet travel abroad that was reportedly not declared in his financial interests statement. The party intends to push for an ad hoc committee to examine the financing of these private flights.
The statements underscore ongoing political tensions regarding the independence of state institutions in Bulgaria.
