Bulgaria MP Mihaela Dotsova Elected as 52nd National Assembly Chair

Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected Parliament Chair during the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly in Bulgaria on Thursday. The election saw 188 deputies from Progressive Bulgaria, GERB-UDF, and the Movement for Rights and Freedom vote in favor of her nomination, while 49 deputies from Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria and Vazrazhdane abstained. In contrast, Peter Petrov of Vazrazhdane garnered support from 12 MPs, faced 175 votes against, and 50 abstentions.

Addressing the assembly, Dotsova outlined several objectives for improving the legislative process in Bulgaria. She stated that the focus must be on restoring best practices, making lawmaking predictable rather than rushed, and ensuring it is based on substantive debate rather than mere procedural formality. She emphasized that legislation must incorporate impact assessments and that policy decisions should prioritize sustainability over short-term political gains.

Dotsova stressed the necessity of strengthening the rule of law within the state. Mihaela Dotsova is a 42-year-old lawyer with significant experience in government administration and the legislative sector. Her professional career has included service at the Ministry of Environment and Water, where she headed the Legal Directorate for over seven years.

She has also worked as a lawyer for the National Assembly and the Sofia Regional Administration. Dotsova holds a PhD in Administrative Law and Administrative Procedure and has authored over 13 scientific publications. Her background provides a deep foundation in administrative law, supporting her role in the governance of Bulgaria.
