Bulgarian Passport Issue Launched

The issuance of new Bulgarian passports commenced on Monday following the opening of the new Administrative Services Centre for the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate in Sofia’s Mladost 4 borough. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated that the project, which began in 2022, has reached a final stage with this facility. Dechev explained that the new identity document personalization centre facilitates a move toward centralized personalization, establishing a more secure model that meets high security standards, while application submission remains decentralized.

He noted that this development strengthens Bulgaria’s security posture and solidifies its standing as a key international partner. He also referenced the previous recognition of the new Bulgarian identity card as the best in Europe. Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Anchev added that the centre incorporates advanced technological capabilities and will also launch electronic identification services.

Notably, Bulgaria will now produce 48-page passports valid for 10 years, although the existing five-year passport option will remain available. Anchev also addressed the accompanying price adjustments, stating they align with production costs and are not significant. Dr.

Stefan Muehlbauer, representing the manufacturing company, commented that the process, which started over a decade ago, has culminated in this result. He emphasized that the goal was to introduce advanced technologies and implement the highest possible security standards for Bulgarian identity documents within the new centre.
