Bulgarian Passport Issue Launched

The issuance of new Bulgarian passports commenced on Monday, coinciding with the opening of the new Administrative Services Centre of the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate in Sofia’s Mladost 4 borough. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated that this facility represents the culmination of a project that began in 2022. The new personalization centre facilitates a move toward centralized personalization, which the authorities report provides a more secure operational model.

While the center meets high security standards for document creation, the submission of applications will remain decentralized. Dechev noted that this enhancement not only strengthens national security but also solidifies Bulgaria’s standing as an international partner. He also mentioned that the new Bulgarian identity card had previously received recognition as the best in Europe.

Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Anchev added that the centre is equipped with advanced technology and will soon launch electronic identification services. Regarding travel documents, Bulgaria will now produce 48-page passports valid for ten years, though the existing five-year options will remain available. Anchev clarified that while there are price adjustments, these are aligned with the increased production costs.

The manufacturing company representative highlighted that the implementation of these advanced systems, which spanned over a decade, successfully integrates the highest level of security technology for Bulgarian identity documents. Overall, the modernization effort marks a significant step in enhancing the security and efficiency of national identification services across the country.
