A recent Eurobarometer survey indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the ongoing transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view the introduction of the euro favorably, while 43% hold a contrary view. When assessing the impact on the wider European Union, 67% of Bulgarians believe the euro is beneficial for the bloc.

Economic expectations show a divided sentiment: 66% of Bulgarians anticipate that the euro will increase inflation, contrasting with 21% who believe the common currency will help maintain price stability. Overall, 47% expect a positive effect from the euro on Bulgaria, while 44% report concerns. On a personal level, 46% anticipate a positive impact, compared to 42% who foresee negative consequences.

In a separate report concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the European Commission advises that Bulgarian authorities must sustain intensive price monitoring. This monitoring should focus on ensuring accurate price display, preventing unjustified price increases, and enforcing consumer protection and competition laws. The Commission also suggests that future euro area enlargements require prolonged and intensive price oversight.

Furthermore, the report recommends considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to a full year. The findings underscore that effective public awareness and communication campaigns are crucial elements for ensuring a smooth transition to the euro for all Bulgarians.
