Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration marking the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising was held in the historic area of Oborishte. The event commenced with the opening of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument site in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address before the monument in Oborishte, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

He stated that the desire for freedom among Bulgarians eventually erupted, culminating in the April Rebellion, which he likened to the Bulgarian spring following a long period. Lalov emphasized that the gathering at Oborishte on April 14, 1876, marked a pivotal moment when delegates from various regions united in the belief of a free Bulgaria. He noted that Oborishte is significant as the beginning of the Bulgarian parliamentary tradition.

Lalov concluded by referencing the belief that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte, suggesting these two locations remain central to the nation’s historical consciousness. The commemoration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, and several local and state authority representatives. Wreaths and floral tributes were laid at the site during the ceremony.
