A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy, measuring approximately three metres in height, is being constructed in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be situated at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, marking a point along the tour’s route. The replica is being created by the artist company Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.
The artists noted that the complexity of the original cup presented a significant challenge. The actual cup, known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), features a distinctive spiral ribbon design that narrows toward the center, resembling an hourglass. The team selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure durability against weather and time.
This material was chosen because it allows for the polished finish seen within the original trophy, while also enabling the recreation of a delicate, shiny edge on the exterior. Once finished, the entire structure will be toned to match the original bronze color. The total height of the installation is projected to be 4.5 metres, including a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo.
The structure is estimated to weigh around 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base to illuminate the trophy after dark. Separately, BTA has launched a dedicated section regarding the Giro d’Italia 2026, confirming that Bulgaria will host three stages of the race between May 8 and May 10, 2026.
