A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is being constructed in Plovdiv for the city’s participation in the cycling tour. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be positioned at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, along the race route. The artwork is being created by the artists Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.
The team noted that replicating the original “Trofeo Senza Fine” proved to be a significant challenge due to the cup’s highly distinctive, complex, and recognizable spiral shape, which resembles an hourglass. Nedyalka Mitkova stated that creating the piece was a major honor and responsibility. To ensure longevity, the artists selected stainless steel for the installation.
This material allows the recreation of the polished effect seen within the original trophy while also enabling a delicate, shiny edge detail on the exterior. Upon completion, the piece will be treated to achieve the original bronze color. While the initial replica was noted as being approximately a three-metre scale representation, the total height of the final installation will reach 4.5 metres.
This structure will include a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo. The entire assembly is estimated to weigh about 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be integrated at the base to illuminate the trophy at night. Separately, BTA has launched a dedicated section for the Giro d’Italia 2026, detailing Bulgaria’s hosting of three stages of the race from May 8 to May 10, 2026.
