Crafts Three-Metre Replica of Giro d’Italia Trophy for Third Stage of Race

A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy, standing three metres tall, is currently being fabricated in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be positioned at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, along the designated route. The trophy is being created by the artist company Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.

The family noted that the complexity and distinctive design of the original cup presented a significant challenge. The original trophy, known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), features a shape resembling a spiral ribbon that rises upward and narrows in the middle, similar to an hourglass. Nedyalka Mitkova stated that creating the piece was both an honor and a major responsibility, as the trophy is intended to become a historical fixture.

The team selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure durability against time and weather. This material also facilitated the recreation of the polished effect seen inside the original trophy, while a delicate shiny edge was replicated on the exterior. Upon completion, the entire structure will be toned to match the original bronze color.

The final installation will measure 4.5 metres in total height, including a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo. The structure is estimated to weigh around 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base to illuminate the trophy at night. Separately, BTA has launched a new section dedicated to “Giro d’Italia 2026 – Cycling in Bulgaria,” covering the three stages scheduled to take place from May 8 to 10, 2026.
