During his participation at the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the current energy situation. He stated that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel and has the capacity to activate emergency stocks for a period of up to three months. Focusing on the ongoing energy crisis, Tzitzikostas suggested that the cancellations announced by some airlines are more attributable to escalating fuel prices rather than actual supply deficits.
He characterized the current energy crisis as historically significant and predicted a challenging summer ahead. Furthermore, the Commissioner cautioned that prolonged instability stemming from the Middle East conflict could lead to severe global repercussions. In other matters, Tzitzikostas detailed the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically important sites throughout Europe.
He also offered a forecast regarding tourism, predicting a sharp decline in the number of visitors traveling from Asia to Europe. The Delphi Forum itself continues through Saturday, April 25, featuring over 200 discussions and panels involving approximately 1,200 international speakers. Participants represent governments, academic institutions, international organizations, and the business sector, with discussions centered on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological shifts.
