Accident Numbers Down in First Months of 2026, Says Labour Inspectorate Executive Director

By mid-April 2026, the overall number of workplace accidents showed a decline, according to General Labour Inspectorate Executive Director Ekaterina Asenova. Statistics indicate that 126 workplace accidents had been reported to date, compared to 157 during the same period in 2025. Fatal workplace accidents were recorded at 26, down from 36 in the corresponding period of 2025.

Non-traumatic fatal incidents also decreased, with 14 cases reported versus 19 in the previous year’s period. Asenova noted that safety regulations are crucial, stating that 90% of workplace accidents could be prevented if occupational safety rules are followed. Common causes cited include crushing, entrapment, falls from height, and being struck by falling objects.

Currently, the high-risk sectors remain construction, crop and livestock farming, metal product manufacturing, and trade. Increased inspection activity in construction has positively impacted the figures, reducing reported accidents from 12 by mid-April 2025 to six in April 2026. Furthermore, land transport has seen a significant reduction in accidents, reporting zero incidents so far in 2026, compared to four workplace accidents, including one fatality, in 2025.

The Director emphasized that employers hold full responsibility for ensuring safe working conditions. Looking ahead, planned activities include targeted inspections in high-risk sectors and focusing on chemical agents and minors’ employment. Information campaigns will continue to build a culture of safety, ensuring that safety considerations are integrated into daily routines
