Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The exhibition, “For the Freedom of a Nation,” organized by the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opens at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

The exhibition features over 130 documents that document the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the uprising. These materials provide insight into the international response to the events, while included Ottoman documents offer perspectives from both local and central Ottoman authorities. Key figures of the period, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov, are among the document authors.

The collection showcases both widely recognized and lesser-known records, some of which are being displayed for the first time. The materials trace events across all revolutionary districts and detail the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction to the uprising. The exhibition officially launched in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture.

This significant cultural event provides a comprehensive historical overview of the period.
