During his participation in the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the current energy landscape. Tzitzikostas stated that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, noting that emergency stocks could sustain operations for a period of up to three months. He asserted that the flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily attributable to escalating fuel costs rather than genuine supply shortages.
The Commissioner characterized the ongoing energy crisis as unprecedented in history and cautioned that the coming summer period is expected to be challenging. Furthermore, Tzitzikostas warned that the global repercussions could be severe if the conflict in the Middle East is not resolved soon. On matters of security and infrastructure, he detailed the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically important sites across the continent.
In economic forecasts, Tzitzikostas predicted a notable downturn in tourist arrivals originating from Asia traveling to Europe. The Delphi Forum, which continues through Saturday, April 25, is a major gathering featuring over 200 discussions and panels involving approximately 1,200 international speakers. Participants represent governments, international organizations, academia, and business sectors, focusing discussions on geopolitical shifts, economic trends, and technological advancements.
