Dance Groups from Essen and Krefeld to Perform Jointly in Munich

The dance community is set to feature a notable collaboration at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, scheduled for May 15 to 17 at the BMW Park in Munich. Two established ensembles, “Shevitsa” from Essen, and “Mila Rodina” from Krefeld, will participate jointly under the combined name, “Shevitsi from Mila Rodina.”

According to their leader, Ivandzhelin Ivanova, the union of the two groups stems from a shared dedication to preserving and promoting Bulgarian culture abroad through traditional dance. This marks the first joint appearance for the combined unit.

The performance piece selected for the festival is “Shopska Zakachka” (“Shopi tease”), choreographed by Iliya Petkov. The routine draws inspiration from the traditional dances of the Shopluk folklore region, aiming to recreate the spirited atmosphere and playful interactions characteristic of village gatherings. The ensemble comprises 22 dancers, representing a range of ages from 14 to over 60.

While some members were born or raised in Germany, they maintain strong cultural connections to their Bulgarian heritage. Preparation for this major performance has involved intensive, weekly rehearsals, alongside the meticulous creation of costumes and accessories. This traveling festival serves as a gathering point for amateur Bulgarian folklore groups from across the globe, having been hosted in various European cities since its inception in 2015.

The collaboration between the groups from Essen and Krefeld is anticipated to be a highlight of the international dance showcase.
