The dance troupes “Shevitsa” from Essen, Germany, and “Mila Rodina” from Krefeld, Germany, are set to collaborate for their first joint performance. Under the combined name “Shevitsi from Mila Rodina,” the two ensembles will participate in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival. This event is scheduled to take place from May 15 to May 17 at the BMW Park in Munich.
According to their leader, Ivandzhelin Ivanova, the collaboration stems from a shared commitment to preserving and promoting Bulgarian culture internationally. The groups will perform the dance “Shopska Zakachka” (“Shopi tease”), a routine choreographed by Iliya Petkov. This piece draws inspiration from the traditional dances of the Shopluk folklore region, aiming to recapture the energetic and playful atmosphere characteristic of village celebrations.
The performing ensemble comprises 22 dancers, with ages ranging from 14 to over 60. A notable aspect of the group is that some members were born or raised in Germany but retain strong ties to their Bulgarian heritage. Preparation for the festival has involved intensive rehearsals several times a week, alongside the creation of costumes and accessories.
This traveling festival gathers amateur Bulgarian folklore dance ensembles from around the globe and has been held in various European cities since its inception in 2015. The joint appearance of the groups from Essen and Krefeld highlights a continued dedication to cultural exchange through traditional dance.
