Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, in a Facebook post on Friday. Earlier that day, Kandev had stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov also addressed the situation via video message, labeling the attempts as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov asserted that a conspiracy against the Secretary General had begun shortly after the government halted attacks on democracy and seized millions of euros intended to undermine elections.
Dechev publicly voiced his support for Kandev, stating his confidence in his integrity and suggesting the future interior minister would face a significant responsibility in resolving the “fabricated scandal.”
Dechev further highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry, noting their success over the past two months in minimizing electoral crimes, which he characterized as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.” He attributed this achievement to considerable effort and resolve, describing the struggle as a defense against forces attempting to subvert the will of the Bulgarian citizens during elections. Dechev concluded by alleging that the adversary utilized powerful allies within the judiciary.
