AES Bulgaria announced on Friday that it must implement a controlled and safe shutdown of the plant, placing it into a conservation mode. This action follows the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). The company stated that this approach is necessary to safeguard the plant and maintain potential for future operations.
The announcement addressed reports of mass layoffs at the Galabovo power station, which were reported by regional labor offices on Thursday. AES Bulgaria noted that future employment at the facility will depend on its evolving operational status, confirming that the company has kept staff informed about the conservation process while treating affected employees with respect. Furthermore, AES Bulgaria confirmed that it has proactively notified Mini Maritsa-East, as its contract for lignite coal supply for electricity generation is also due to expire concurrently.
The company emphasized its ongoing dialogue with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders. These discussions aim to identify development opportunities that could enable the AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant to continue contributing to Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. AES Bulgaria also clarified that these changes do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm in Kavarna, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio.
