Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov issued a statement on Friday asserting the full support of the caretaker government for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov stated that the public would also support Kandev, characterizing the recent events as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.”

Gurov’s remarks followed a video message from Kandev, in which he claimed he was pressured to resign due to false testimony provided against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one known by the nickname “Kartofa.” The Prime Minister suggested that this alleged conspiracy arose after efforts to halt attacks on democracy and seize funds intended to undermine elections. Gurov specifically named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as being involved in this conspiracy.

He labeled the actions as revenge, issuing a warning to those who might oppose those working lawfully. The Prime Minister directed his comments toward the situation at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who Gurov described as an associate of Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the prosecutor overseeing the caretaker government. Addressing political groups he referred to dismissively, Gurov asserted that the government and the nation were aware of their presence and were not intimidated.

Further context was provided by caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, who had previously alleged that in 2021, Rusinova had traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia, and that Rusinova repeatedly crossed the border accompanied by several individuals, including Petrov.
