Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly affirmed his and the caretaker government’s support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. In a video message released on Friday, Gurov stated that the entire government backed Kandev, adding that “Every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”

Gurov’s statement followed remarks from Kandev, who asserted that he faced pressure to resign after individuals, including one known by the nickname “Kartofa,” provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. The Prime Minister characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.”

“After we put a stop to the attacks on democracy and seized millions of euro being used to undermine the elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General has been set in motion,” Gurov stated.

He indicated that a former police chief and the businessman nicknamed “Kartofa” were implicated in this alleged conspiracy. Gurov labeled the actions as “revenge” and a warning to those willing to act lawfully. The Prime Minister specifically named the Sofia City Prosecution Office and prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, alleging she is connected to Petyo “The Euro” Petrov and holds influence over parliamentary immunities within the caretaker government.

Furthermore, Gurov addressed political opponents, asserting that the government was aware of their presence and that the public support was substantial. Adding to the context, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously told the media that in 2021, Rusinova traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia. According to information obtained by the Interior Ministry, Rusinova reportedly crossed the border multiple times on trips accompanied by several individuals, at times including Petrov.
