Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly backed Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, following statements from Kandev alleging pressure to resign. In a video message on Friday, Gurov asserted that the entire caretaker government stood with Kandev, suggesting that “every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”
Kandev had previously stated that he faced pressure, including false testimony from individuals, at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. In response, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” The Prime Minister noted that the conspiracy against the Secretary General emerged after efforts were made to curb attacks on democracy and seize misused funds intended for elections.
Gurov stated that he had been informed of the involvement of a former police chief and a businessman, whom he identified by the nickname “Kartofa,” in this plot. He framed the actions as retaliation. Furthermore, Gurov specifically criticized Prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, linking her to Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the oversight of parliamentary immunities within the caretaker government structure.
Adding to the context, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova was observed traveling with Petrov to North Macedonia. Dechev’s account, based on information from the Interior Ministry, suggested that Rusinova made multiple border crossings accompanied by several individuals, sometimes including Petrov. Gurov concluded his remarks by issuing a general warning to political opponents regarding their efforts to undermine the Ministry and the government’s stability.
