Honorary Consulate Opens in Serbian City of Novi Sad, Srbijagaz Director Appointed Consul

An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was opened in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, local media reported on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, Director of Srbijagaz and a senior official of the Socialist Party of Serbia, was appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.

During the event, Bajatovic addressed the attendees, emphasizing the deep historical and cultural ties between the Serbian and Russian peoples. He stated that while Serbs recognize a brotherly bond, he noted that much remains unknown about Russia’s culture, scientific advancements, and natural beauty. Bajatovic also highlighted the importance of cultural exchange, noting that the Russian Historical Society was established with assistance from Aleksandar Vulin to preserve historical narratives.

He affirmed the commitment to deepening bilateral ties through educational and cultural cooperation. Furthermore, Bajatovic announced plans for student exchanges and the establishment of a Russian school in the area. He expressed a desire to demonstrate that Russia possesses significant knowledge and culture, counteracting any perception that such learning must originate exclusively from Western sources.

The establishment of the consulate in Novi Sad signals a renewed focus on strengthening academic and cultural connections between the two nations.
