Inspect Landslide near Pamporovo, Consider Temporary Bypass Road

Geologists and engineers inspected a section of the third-class road (III-8641) connecting Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been impacted by a significant landslide. Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, reported that the inspection aimed to evaluate options for temporary stabilization and the construction of a bypass road to restore traffic flow until a permanent solution is developed. The working group, which included engineer Kalin Kalchev and representatives from the road maintenance company, reviewed all potential routes on site.

According to Kushev, the most viable option identified is utilizing an existing road that passes above the area affected by the landslide. Officials stated that affected properties will be inspected to analyze possibilities for widening the route and creating temporary passing points for vehicle traffic. Kushev indicated that a determination regarding the feasibility of this temporary bypass road is anticipated early next week.

While the primary goal is the quickest restoration of the road, this arrangement is expected to be temporary and present certain challenges. Preliminary assessments suggest the terrain is in relatively stable condition, though a final evaluation is still pending. This potential temporary bypass is estimated to be approximately one and a half kilometers long.

During the assessment, an alternative route running beneath the landslide, along a forest road, was also examined but was found to be unusable due to earth displacement. Experts noted that the landslide is extensive, which complicates the implementation of rapid repair measures. Efforts to analyze options for restoring the road continue.

  1. I hope they can figure out a temporary route quickly; that road is essential for local travel.
