During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, President Iliana Iotova addressed the newly sworn-in members of the legislature, emphasizing the critical necessity of passing the 2026 national budget. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as a significant sign of recent institutional deadlock. The head of State warned that any further delay jeopardizes stability and predictability for Bulgarian citizens, businesses, and governing institutions.
Iotova stressed that achieving stability requires concerted effort across all sectors. The President noted that restoring public trust in Bulgarian institutions will be a long-term endeavor requiring action from all branches of government. She stated that the electorate had entrusted a single political force with expectations of stable governance, a clear separation of powers as outlined in the Constitution, and rigorous efforts against corruption.
Shifting focus to the international stage, Iotova urged Bulgaria to adopt a more assertive posture within the European Union. She argued that after nineteen years of EU membership, Bulgaria must actively contribute its viewpoint, asserting that its perspective is as valuable as those of any other member state. According to Iotova, Bulgaria possesses significant contributions to the security of the EU’s external borders and has substantial input regarding the development of the Western Balkans.
She concluded that for Europe to regain international leadership and competitiveness, it requires the full and vocal participation of all its members.
