At a conference in Panagyurishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, journalist Boyko Vassilev asserted that three specific journalists significantly contributed to the success of the uprising, which ultimately led to the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. The event was organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). Vassilev, host of the Panorama program on Bulgarian National Television, identified these three key figures.
He named Zahari Stoyanov, who documented both the positive and negative aspects of Bulgaria’s history; Hristo Botev, credited with publicizing the seizure of the ship Radetzky and the details of his death, an event that resonated across Europe; and Januarius MacGahan, who exposed the atrocities occurring in Bulgaria to an international audience. Vassilev emphasized the comprehensive nature of truthful reporting, noting that words must address both “light and shadow.” He recounted a poignant scene from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings, describing how Georgi Benkovski observed the burning of Panagyurishte and the death of those who had placed their trust in him, yet maintained that his objectives had been met. According to Vassilev, this moment encapsulated profound tragedy and the moral complexities inherent in leadership.
Regarding BTA’s conference series, Vassilev stated that the sessions are intended as dialogues rather than mere lectures, aiming to connect historical events to modern Bulgaria. He argued that the uprising continues to raise questions relevant to the nation’s public life. Furthermore, he pointed out that even during the 50th anniversary commemoration, Bulgarian society exhibited deep divisions, offering a warning he deemed contemporary.
Vassilev concluded that the April Uprising represents an “eternal political Bulgaria that we continue to see.”
