Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov stated that the judicial system should not remain under an acting Prosecutor General who, in his view, operates contrary to law and morality. Speaking on Monday, Yankulov commented that the recent elections provided clear outcomes: the victory of Progressive Bulgaria and the significant defeat of established political entities associated with the judiciary’s perceived corruption. According to Yankulov, a crucial immediate challenge for Bulgaria involves translating the public’s strong support for judicial reform into tangible political action.
He suggested that the poor showing for parties committed to maintaining the status quo indicates that citizens view reform as unavoidable. The minister expressed his hope that restoring legality within the prosecution service could serve as an initial step toward change. Yankulov emphasized that this reform effort should not wait for the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) composition.
While the SJC election is important, he stressed that its proper execution is paramount, cautioning against prioritizing speed over accuracy. He asserted that the selection process must guarantee that honest professionals are chosen who will serve the public interest rather than partisan interests. The minister criticized the SJC and its Prosecutors’ College, suggesting they had ample opportunity over the past two months to recognize the situation and act with professional integrity.
Yankulov warned that if they fail to do so, the incoming parliament might address the issue through standard legislative means early in its first session. These comments were made by Justice Minister Yankulov regarding the ongoing state of justice reform.
