Language Classroom Will Open at Bulgarian Sunday School in Tatarbunary

A multimedia language classroom for studying Bulgarian at the Balgarche Bulgarian Sunday School in Tatarbunary, Ukraine, was set to open with support from Bulgaria. Svetoslav Ivanov, Consul General of Bulgaria in Odesa, announced that the project was executed in alignment with the Council of Ministers Decree No. 224 of October 30, 2025, and a broader program supporting Bulgarian communities across several nations, including Ukraine.

Ivanov explained that the initiative was one of eight approved proposals, submitted by the Tatarbunary Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Society Rodolyubie, which operates the school. The primary objective of the project is to safeguard and advance Bulgarian culture and linguistic identity. By integrating modern teaching tools, the goal is to encourage students of Bulgarian origin to acquire knowledge and maintain their historical connection to Bulgaria.

The support is noted as particularly vital given the school’s location in a mixed-population area. The Bulgarian Sunday School Balgarche was initially established in 2014. Since the 2016–2017 academic year, the institution expanded by opening branches in Tatarbunary, Kiliia, and the village of Novoselivka.

Beyond formal instruction, the school offers diverse extracurricular activities, including workshops in folk dance, traditional instruments, singing, theatrical arts, and applied folk crafts. Currently, the school serves 341 students in these extracurricular programs, supported by 45 teachers. The Balgarche facility is a member of the World Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad.

The opening of the advanced multimedia classroom signifies an upgrade in the resources available for Bulgarian language education, reinforcing its role in cultural preservation.
